We were both pregnant by my husband. My mother-in-law said: “Whoever has a son will stay.” I immediately divorced him without thinking. After 7 months, my husband’s entire family witnessed a sh0cking incident.

When I found out I was pregnant, I hoped it would save my troubled marriage. Instead, I discovered that my husband, Marco, had another woman who was also expecting a baby. During a family meeting, my mother-in-law cruelly declared that whoever gave birth to a boy would stay in the family, while the one who had a girl should leave. Marco said nothing, and I realized I could not stay in a home filled with discrimination. The next day, I filed for legal separation and left with only a few belongings and the determination to build a better life for my child.

I moved to Cebu, where I found work as a receptionist at a small clinic. Surrounded by the love and support of my mother and friends, I slowly rebuilt my life. Meanwhile, Marco’s new partner, Clarissa, was welcomed into his family and treated like royalty because everyone believed she would give them the long-awaited male heir. Although I heard about their celebrations, I chose not to compete with them, believing that time would eventually reveal the truth.

I later gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Alyssa. Holding her in my arms made me realize that the only thing that truly mattered was that she was safe and loved. A few weeks later, I learned that Clarissa had also given birth. Marco’s family celebrated, believing the baby was the son they had always wanted. However, their happiness quickly turned into shock when the baby was revealed to be a girl and hospital tests showed that Marco was not the child’s biological father.

The truth devastated Marco’s family. Clarissa left with her child, Marco was overwhelmed with shame, and my mother-in-law became seriously ill after the shocking news. Despite everything they had done to me, I felt no joy in their suffering. Instead, I felt peaceful because I knew I did not need revenge. Life itself had shown that honesty and kindness are more valuable than pride and discrimination.

One evening, as I watched the sunset while putting Alyssa to sleep, I promised her that she would grow up in a home filled with love, respect, and equality. I told her that she would never be judged because of her gender and would always be valued for who she was. As tears filled my eyes, I realized they were no longer tears of sadness but of relief, because I had finally found true freedom and a better future for both of us.
