The Girl Who Lied to Help Others..

While shopping at a supermarket, I was approached by a young girl who claimed she was a few dollars short because she was an orphan. Feeling sorry for her, I gave her $5. A week later, I saw her again, but this time she told a completely different story—that her mother was sick. When I confronted her about the contradiction, she ran away, leaving me feeling deceived.

A store employee later explained that the girl had been doing this for a while, but not for personal gain. Instead of keeping the money, she secretly used it to help other shoppers—especially elderly people who couldn’t afford all their groceries and quietly put items back at the checkout.

The employee shared her heartbreaking past. As a child, she watched her sick mother struggle to pay for groceries, often having to leave food behind. After her mother passed away, the girl couldn’t bear seeing others experience the same hardship, so she found her own misguided way to help them.

The next time I saw her, I offered her $5, but this time I encouraged her to help honestly instead of through deception. She agreed, placed a donation jar near customer service with the store’s permission, and began volunteering at the store’s food drive. She continued supporting struggling shoppers—this time with honesty, earning trust along with kindness.
