A Foster Sister’s Kindness Led Us Back to Each Other..

I entered foster care at seven years old, and my foster sister, Lily, became my greatest source of comfort. She protected me, shared her food, and found ways to make me smile despite the difficult environment. When she was adopted at thirteen, we lost contact, and I never saw her again, though I never forgot the kindness that helped me survive.

Twenty years later, I had become a lawyer when I saw the name “Lily” scheduled for an appointment. I wondered if it was just a coincidence, but the moment she walked into my office, I recognized her. We embraced with tears, overwhelmed to have found each other after so many years apart.

Lily explained that she had adopted her first foster child, a seven-year-old boy named Eli, and was creating a nonprofit to support children in foster care. She had spent months searching for me through state bar directories because she wanted me to serve as the organization’s lawyer. As I signed the legal papers for free, she told me something I had never expected: she believed I had helped her survive those difficult years just as much as she had helped me.

Today, the nonprofit has been helping foster children for two years, and I proudly volunteer alongside Lily. We once believed only one of us had been the rescuer, but we learned that hope and kindness had carried us both. Reunited after decades apart, we dedicated our second chance to giving other foster children the support and future they deserve.
