The Call That Kept My Daughter’s Memory Alive..

My 23-year-old daughter passed away while studying out of state, and her phone was never found. For two years, I called her number just to hear her voicemail and feel close to her. Then, one Tuesday, someone answered. It was Jenna, my daughter’s former college roommate, whose voice I recognized immediately.

Jenna explained that when the phone company was about to disconnect my daughter’s number, she quietly transferred it to her own account. For 24 months, she paid the $14 monthly bill, never changed the voicemail, and never used the phone. She knew I still called to hear my daughter’s voice and wanted to preserve that small comfort.

She admitted she had occasionally listened to my voicemails—not to invade my privacy, but to make sure I was okay. Jenna also shared how much my daughter had meant to her, revealing that she had helped her through depression, convinced her not to leave college, and stayed by her side after the loss of her own mother. “Your daughter is the reason I’m still alive,” she said.

When I asked why she had never told me, Jenna simply replied, “You needed to call her. I didn’t want to get in the way of that.” Her quiet act of compassion reminded me that some of the greatest kindnesses happen without recognition—they simply keep hope, love, and memories alive until someone is ready to heal.
