For some passengers, that stress increases when they notice an unfamiliar code on their boarding pass: **“SSSS.”**

SSSS stands for **Secondary Security Screening Selection**, a designation used by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Travelers with this code may be subject to additional screening before boarding, which can include more thorough luggage inspections, identity checks, electronic-device screening, and sometimes a pat-down. Because passengers generally aren’t told in advance, the process can come as a surprise.

The selection is connected to the TSA’s **Secure Flight** system, which uses passenger information as part of its security-screening process. Selection can occur for various reasons, and some travelers may be selected at random. Importantly, seeing SSSS on a boarding pass does **not** by itself mean the traveler has done anything wrong or is suspected of a crime.

If you receive the designation, the best approach is simply to allow extra time and cooperate with the screening process. Keep your identification and travel documents accessible, organize your belongings, and expect that security may take longer than usual. While SSSS can be inconvenient, it is a security measure—not a declaration of guilt or wrongdoing.
