Does Unplugging Appliances Save Electricity? Yes—and See the 8 Biggest Energy Hogs

Leaving appliances plugged in can quietly waste electricity, even when they appear to be turned off. Many electronics continue using small amounts of power through what is known as “standby power” or a “phantom load.” This electricity keeps features such as clocks, displays, memory settings, and remote-control functions active. According to the original article, an appliance using just 1 watt continuously can consume about 9 kWh per year, and unnecessary standby use across a home can add significantly to annual energy costs.

As Antoni Singer explains, **“While these energy draws may seem insignificant individually, they accumulate over time, leading to higher energy bills and increased environmental impact.”** Unplugging devices can therefore be a simple way to reduce wasted electricity while also lowering certain electrical risks. Devices left connected can be vulnerable to power surges, overheating, faulty wiring, or other problems, particularly when no one is home.

You do not need to unplug every appliance every day. Instead, focus on the biggest energy users that sit unused for long periods. Computers and laptops can consume power in standby mode, while game consoles continue drawing electricity so they are ready to start quickly. Older cable boxes and DVRs may also use considerable energy even when they are not actively being used.

Other common energy vampires include microwaves, which use power for their displays and controls, as well as small kitchen appliances such as coffee makers, air fryers, and toasters. Cell phone chargers should also be unplugged after use rather than left connected indefinitely.
For convenience, power strips and smart plugs can make the process much easier. With one switch or command, several devices can be disconnected at once. Making unplugging part of your daily routine can help cut unnecessary energy use, reduce utility costs, and make your home a little safer.
