The Seven-Day Trap

The lawyer opened the envelope and revealed my father’s final will. Thomas had left me the estate, his company shares, and nearly everything Caroline assumed would be hers—but only because I had stayed with him voluntarily during his final seven days. Then the lawyer explained the real reason: Thomas had known Caroline and her mother had spent years pressuring him to rewrite his will, and he wanted proof that I came to him for nothing but a chance to know my father.

Caroline exploded when she learned the truth. She accused me of manipulating a dying man, but the lawyer calmly placed another document on the table: recordings and financial records showing that she had been quietly draining money from my father’s accounts. Thomas had discovered everything months earlier. My arrival had not been a coincidence—it had been his final test, and his way of making sure the daughter he abandoned would finally be protected.

I almost refused the inheritance anyway. The estate felt like blood money for a childhood I could never get back. But then I found a letter Thomas had written in secret. He admitted that fear and cowardice had kept him away from me, and that giving me everything was not meant to buy forgiveness. “You deserved a father,” he wrote. “I cannot give you back the years I stole. But I can make sure nobody ever takes another future from you.”

Six months later, I sold the mansion and used part of the money to create a foundation for children aging out of foster care. Caroline faced the consequences of what she had done, while I finally built a life that belonged to me.
