The Billionaire Who Lost Everything by Sunrise

By the time I landed in Seattle, Evelyn had already invoked the trust’s emergency voting provisions. Daniel’s access to several controlling shares was suspended pending an investigation, and the board received copies of the diary pages that proved he had planned to use our marriage—and my pregnancy—to protect his position during the merger. When I finally turned my phone back on, there were forty-three missed calls. The forty-fourth came while I was standing beside my sister’s car. “Claire, please,” Daniel said. “You don’t understand what you’re doing.” I looked at the sunrise. “Actually, Daniel, for the first time, I understand everything.”

I named my daughter Grace because, unlike Daniel, I wanted her to grow up knowing that love was never supposed to feel like a cage. The last message he ever sent me read, I thought you needed me. I never replied. I simply watched my daughter sleep and smiled, because Daniel had finally learned the truth: I had never been trapped. He had only mistaken my patience for dependence. READ MORE BELOW
