The Wheel of Fortune $40,000 Miss: A Compassionate Look at Pressure, Puzzles, and the Hindsight Bias

Watching a contestant miss an apparently simple game-show puzzle can make us think, “I would have solved that instantly.” But that reaction ignores what it feels like to perform under intense pressure. On Wheel of Fortune, Conner Kemmsies came close to solving the Bonus Round puzzle, “I DID MY HOMEWORK,” but time expired before he could give the answer. He had already won $19,080 in cash and prizes, while the missed puzzle represented an additional $40,000.

What seems obvious afterward may feel completely different in the moment. The ticking clock, bright lights, audience, and enormous prize can create intense stress and narrow our thinking. This is why the “game show freeze” is not necessarily a sign of low intelligence or poor preparation. “This isn’t a failure of intelligence; it’s a biological response to an artificial, high-stress environment.”

Once the answer is revealed, our brains immediately connect the clues, making the solution seem obvious. This is known as hindsight bias. From the comfort of home, it is easy to judge someone who is under pressure. But “It is incredibly easy to judge a performance when you are not the one sweating under the lights.”
Missing the bonus prize was disappointing, but it does not erase Kemmsies’ achievement. He still walked away with $19,080. A near miss should not overshadow what was successfully accomplished. The same lesson applies beyond game shows—to exams, interviews, presentations, and difficult decisions.

We all have moments when pressure affects our performance. Instead of asking, “How could they miss that?” we can ask, “How did they handle such a difficult moment?” Remember: “Your worth is not determined by your performance in a high-stress moment.” Celebrate what you achieved, accept what went wrong, and give yourself and others grace. Sometimes, the greatest victory is simply having the courage to play.
