My Teacher Fed Me When I Was Poor—10 Years Later, I Became Her Lawyer

When I was 14, my family was so poor that I often couldn’t afford lunch at school. I would pretend that I had simply forgotten my lunch so no one would know. One teacher noticed what was happening and quietly started bringing me food every day. Her kindness meant more to me than she probably realized, but during that school year, she suddenly disappeared and never returned.

Ten years later, I had become a lawyer when I saw her name on my appointment list. When she walked into my office, I immediately recognized those same kind eyes. She didn’t recognize me at first, but when I told her my name, her face lit up with a smile. Then I noticed that she was trembling. Her husband of 20 years had left her for a younger woman and had taken her savings as part of a carefully planned scheme.

She had come to my office because she couldn’t afford a lawyer and was hoping for help or reduced fees. The moment I understood her situation, I told her I would take her case for free. I fought for her as hard as I could, determined to help the woman who had once made sure I never went hungry when I was a struggling teenager.

We won the case, and she recovered all of her stolen savings, along with additional damages. She hugged me tightly and tearfully told me that I had saved her. I smiled and told her, “I’m only repaying a debt.” She once gave me food when I had nothing, and years later, I was finally able to give something back. I also told her that whenever she needed me, she could count on me—always.
