That Tiny Piece on Target Shopping Baskets Has a Surprising Purpose

Have you ever noticed a small plastic looking piece near the handle of a Target shopping basket It may look like an ordinary part of the basket but on some baskets it can contain electronic hardware The device has been identified as a Bluetooth Low Energy beacon which can communicate with systems inside the store and help determine where the basket is located

The technology has attracted attention online because some people believe the device is designed to secretly track shoppers However the reality is more specific A beacon can send a signal that allows compatible systems to detect the basket’s location Since GPS is not especially useful inside large buildings retailers can use indoor positioning technology to understand where equipment is moving

The most important distinction is between tracking a basket and identifying the person carrying it A beacon that communicates the location of a basket is not automatically the same thing as a device that identifies the person carrying it Connecting a basket’s movements to a particular shopper would require additional systems or information that links the basket to that individual

There are several possible reasons a retailer might use this technology including monitoring how baskets move around a store managing equipment or supporting operational planning However the presence of a beacon does not reveal exactly how the retailer is using it Different stores and batches of baskets may also have different equipment

So the next time you see that tiny component near a Target basket handle it may be more than a simple piece of plastic It could be a Bluetooth beacon helping the store locate its equipment The device can help identify the basket’s location That is quite different from saying the device automatically knows who you are or what you are buying.
