After years of spending $700 on New Year’s dinner for seven people, cooking for days, and handling all the cleaning, one host finally asked guests to share the cost, only to face criticism and accusations of charging admission. Feeling unappreciated, they canceled the gathering, later discovered that the group had arranged another dinner where everyone would split the expenses, and left the group chat, realizing that their generosity had been taken for granted. The story highlights a growing concern as the cost of living rises, with new research revealing that 46% of Brits now ask guests to contribute toward Christmas food and drinks, showing that holiday hosting is increasingly becoming a shared financial responsibility rather than a burden for one person.
