My husband and I built our marriage on one promise: we never wanted children. But two months ago, his younger sister left her three children—a 5-year-old and 2-year-old twins—with us, claiming she was running an errand, and never returned. After discovering she was safe but had abandoned them, we became their temporary caregivers. Our one-bedroom apartment became overcrowded, finances grew tight, and I struggled to balance working from home with caring for three young children. When Child Protective Services asked whether we wanted permanent custody, I said no because motherhood was never the life I wanted. However, my husband wanted to raise them, despite our lifelong agreement to remain child-free. Realizing that our futures no longer aligned, I told him I wanted a divorce before he committed us to parenthood. He accused me of abandoning him, but I stood by my decision, believing that his choice to become a father had fundamentally changed the marriage we had both agreed to build.
