Beandri Booysen: Girl In South Africa With Progeria Dies

Beandri Booysen, a teenage girl who radiated an undeniable “hope and joy” for life despite suffering from an extremely rare aging disease, passed away just days before Christmas. She was 19 years old.

Diagnosed at seven months old with Progeria — also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome — Beandri was not expected to live past the age of 14, as her condition forced her to age eight times faster than the average human.

But in her nearly two decades of life, her heartwarming content on social media inspired thousands of viewers online.

On Wednesday, December 18, her mother, Bea Booysene, confirmed the news on her daughter’s Facebook page titled “In Loving Memory of Beandri Booysen.”

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Beandri Booysen, one of South Africa’s most beloved and inspirational young women,” Bea wrote in a text now translated into English.

“Beandri was not only known for her vibrant personality and infectious laugh, but was also the last surviving person in South Africa to live with Progeria.”

She continued, “She was a voice and a symbol of awareness for Progeria and other special needs, and inspired thousands with her unique spirit. She never stopped fighting.”

While a memorial service is yet to be announced, her family has requested privacy during this “extremely difficult time.”

Beandri’s presence on social media was undeniable, as she used her platform to “raise awareness”

From the beginning, Beandri’s motto was simple: “Be yourself. Love yourself. Believe in yourself.”

The 19-year-old was determined to show exactly that on TikTok, where she had nearly 300,000 followers, with many of her videos garnering hundreds of thousands of views.

In an interview earlier this year, Beandri spoke about how she wished to use social media as a way to “inspire” and “motivate” her audience, sharing tips on how to adapt her positive mindset.

“I face everything that God brings into my life and I credit my family for my strength and support by raising me as a ‘normal’ child and not one to be seen as different to others,” she said.

Her hope was to highlight “other special needs individuals and show that everyone is different and unique in their own way and to give strength” in any way she could.

According to the Daily Mail, Beandri only weighed 12kg. Despite this setback, she still attended school and had big dreams of settling down and having kids at 25 years old — before hopefully landing a job as a teacher.

Beandri was determined to spread positivity, despite her limiting disease

The odds of having a child with progeria are 1 in 4 million, as per the Cleveland Clinic. This means only 400 young adults and children in the world currently suffer from the disease.

Symptoms start to show within a toddler’s first two years of life which include—but are not limited to—wrinkled skin, growth failure, balding, and loss of body fat.

The average life expectancy hovers at around 14-15 years old. Some may die younger while others can live to see their second decade of life.

While there is currently no cure for progeria, researchers are actively studying various drugs in order to treat this condition.

Netizens offered their condolences and reflected on her continuously optimistic outlook

I’d been away on a business trip, and after finishing early, I booked a surprise flight home to my husband, David. I imagined his face lighting up when I walked through the door. We hadn’t had much “us” time lately, and I wanted to make it special. The house was quiet, just as I’d expected it would be. Assuming David was in his office, I stepped into the backyard — then, I FROZE. Near the garden was David, frantically shoveling dirt. And in front of him lay a LARGE BLACK EGG. It wasn’t like anything I’d ever seen — huge, glossy, and pitch black, like something out of a fantasy movie. I almost laughed, thinking it might be a prank, but David’s expression stopped me. His hands were shaking, and he looked around nervously. “David?” I called softly. He froze, then turned to face me, full of panic. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” he asked, his voice trembling and loud. “I wanted to surprise you. What’s going on? What is… that?” “IT’S NOTHING!” he said quickly, looking away. “David, I don’t think that’s ‘NOTHING.’ What is it? And why didn’t you tell me you were doing this?” His expression faltered. “Trust me. I’m just doing what needs to be done.” But my instincts told me something was off. The next day, when David left for work, I couldn’t resist — I HAD TO DIG THAT THING UP!⬇️😱Continues in the comments

One of my twins got sick, so I took them both in for tests. A few days later, I went to pick up the results alone, and the doctor asked me how long ago I adopted the boys. Imagine my shock. My jaw dropped. “Adopted? My wife would never lie to me!” The doctor placed his hand on my shoulder. “Sorry, but the DNA results don’t lie. They’re not your sons! But that’s not all; there’s something even more concerning.” I was stunned. “What could possibly be worse?” The doctor’s words will haunt me forever: “THESE BOYS ARE YOUR HALF-BROTHERS.”I nearly fainted, but I knew I needed answers. I went straight home, found my wife, and asked her one question: “DID YOU SLEEP WITH MY FATHER, NANCY?!” 👇👇👇 (Continues in comment)

THE DOG BARKS DESPERATELY AT THE PREGNANT WOMAN… BUT WHEN THE POLICE FOUND OUT THE TRUTH, IT WAS ALREADY TOO LATE… In the noisy terminal of the airport, where the voices of passengers buzzed and suitcase wheels squeaked, a German Shepherd named Rex suddenly broke the usual noise with his furious barking. His sharp eyes were fixed on a young pregnant woman, who froze in place, her hand pressed against her abdomen. Her face paled, and the crowd around fell silent, watching the drama unfold. Rex, trained to detect drugs and explosives, never made a mistake. But what was he sensing in this fragile silhouette, whose fear seemed so sincere? Security guard Andrei, Rex’s partner, felt his heart tighten with premonition. This wasn’t just barking — it was a cry of danger. The woman stepped back, her trembling voice begging them to stop the dog, but Rex wouldn’t calm down. His growl grew louder, the hair on his neck stood up, and his body tensed as if preparing for a leap. Passengers whispered, someone filmed the incident with their phone, and the guards exchanged vigilant glances. Andrei trusted Rex as much as he trusted himself, but now the situation was beyond a routine check. Was this woman a threat? Or was Rex sensing something that humans couldn’t see? The guards escorted her to the control room, and Rex, pulling on the leash, continued to bark, as if trying to warn of an impending disaster. Tension hung in the air, and every step the woman took seemed to lead toward unraveling the mystery. In the control room, the atmosphere reached its peak. The woman, holding her abdomen, repeated that she hadn’t done anything, but her voice trembled, and her eyes filled with tears. Rex scratched the floor in front of the door, his anxious barking echoing in the hallway. The guards checked her belongings but found nothing. Andrei looked at the dog, feeling a chill run down his spine. Something was wrong, and Rex knew it. Suddenly, the woman screamed, clutching her abdomen, her face twisting in pain. She whispered, “Something’s wrong,” and collapsed onto the chair, gasping for breath. The paramedics stormed into the room, but Rex rushed forward, his barking growing frantic. And at that moment, the doctor, placing his hand on her abdomen, froze, his face paling. ‘These are not labor pains,’ he said, and…” 📖 Read the continuation in the comments below 👇👇👇
