The Day My Daughter Learned About Life’s Little Mysteries

My daughter once asked me, “Where do babies come from?” I explained it to her in the most gentle way possible, telling her that babies grow inside their mother’s tummy and are brought into the world with love and care. The very next day, a boy from her class told her that children are actually found inside cabbages. My daughter disagreed and confidently shared everything she had learned with him, certain she was setting the record straight.

The following day, the boy’s parents called me and asked to meet. I felt nervous, wondering if my explanation had caused trouble. When we met, they looked serious and explained that their “cabbage story” was a fun family tradition, passed down for generations to make the topic lighthearted for kids. Their son had been upset when he felt his story wasn’t true anymore.

I smiled and suggested a solution. “What if we told the kids that babies are brought into the world with love, and the cabbage garden is a magical place where the dreams of families grow? That way, both stories can be true in their own way.” The boy’s parents loved the idea, and we decided to make it a fun learning moment for the children rather than a disagreement.

A week later, the school held a “Garden of Stories” day. The children drew their own versions of where life begins — some drew cabbages, others drew stars, and some drew families holding hands. My daughter proudly said, “Stories are like seeds. They grow in different ways, but they all make the world beautiful.” The boy nodded and added with a smile, “And sometimes, even cabbages can grow magic!”
